New Years Eve

New Years Eve

On branch of silver birch
Pigeon and magpie meet
To bask in mid winter sunlight
For a moment lost

The powder blue above stretches forever
The remnants of a vapour trail point to nowhere
Brittle branch and evergreen below
Eternal ghosts

Wooden crow on a black stump stares
Oblivious to the shuffling in the undergrowth behind
In quiet contemplation sits
And unbeknownst protects his host

Another year another year
And folks will spill from homes
Fall from perches
Sit maudlin
Bathe and boast

Equate conspire predict reflect
All snuggled burrow comfort sought
Unravelled lives and favours bought
All eyes transfixed on lonesome child
Who owns the least and smiles the most

And so the moment passes
Magpie raises wing departs
As vapour dissipates
And pigeon puzzles on the branch
What’s gone is gone and always is
Whilst unaware the watcher takes to pen and peppermint
In humble toast

The lesson to appreciate lies way beyond the trees
In sleepy station a couple embrace
All misty eyed and dewy glows
A moment is a moment after all
Enjoy
The train will soon be leaving for the coast
